Attorney General’s Office and Clearwater County Attorney’s Office secure conviction for second-degree murder
Christyan Logan pleads guilty to second-degree felony murder following September 2025 killing of Tray McCollum in Bagley
October 2, 2026 (SAINT PAUL) — Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison’s office today secured the conviction of Christyan Matthew Logan for second-degree felony murder for the September 21, 2025 assault and killing of Tray McCollum in Bagley, Minnesota.
On September 21, 2025, following an argument in a vehicle, Logan pulled the vehicle over and assaulted McCollum by repeatedly punching and stomping him to death. At the plea hearing today, Logan admitted that he assaulted McCollum and continued to assault McCollum as he was unconscious. McCollum died of the injuries he sustained from Logan’s assault.
Attorney General Ellison’s office prosecuted Logan upon a referral from Clearwater County Attorney Karin Hughes under Minnesota Statutes section 8.01, which provides, “Upon request of the county attorney, the attorney general shall appear in court in such criminal cases as the attorney general deems proper.” The authority vested in the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office is primarily civil. Aside from referrals submitted under section 8.01 and Medicaid fraud, the Minnesota Attorney General’s Office does not have authority to prosecute most criminal acts. That authority generally rests with county and city attorneys.
“Logan’s crimes are horrifying, and today’s guilty plea ensures that Logan will be held accountable for taking Tray’s life,” said Attorney General Ellison. “My heart breaks for Tray’s family, friends, and loved ones. I will continue to partner with law enforcement across Minnesota to ensure people face justice when they commit such heinous offenses and harm their fellow Minnesotans.”
Attorney General Ellison thanks the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, the Clearwater County Sheriff’s Office, and the Bagley Police Department, who assisted in the investigation and successful prosecution of this crime.
